Starts today, Sunday, in Dubai symposium on "Metrologies of genetically modified food," organized by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology Authority (Standards) in collaboration with the Gulf Standardization and the American Ministry of Agriculture and will last for three days. H.E Waleed Bin Falah Al Mansouri, director general of the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology insists the importance of the symposium, with the debate about the safety of genetically modified foods at the international level and positions expressed by importing countries and some scientists and environmental advocates about the potential impact of genetically modified substances on the environment and human at the time considered Exporting countries such concerns as trade barriers to limit exports of these foodstuffs. H.E pointed out that it will exposure to the WTO agreements on phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade in respect of bio-technology used in the production of genetically modified food, adding that the symposium comes in the framework of joint cooperation with the Gulf Standardization in the annual training programs on various activities of the specifications and standards GCC Gulf Arab states made available to all those concerned and specialists. Many experts and specialists from the ESMA, representatives of the legislative, regulatory, and academic and private sector industrial and commercial companies and service laboratories involved in the food sector will participate in the symposium, where genetically modified seminar aims to access to international legislation and to increase the awareness of workers in food on the subject. He also said that experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Commercial Office in the U.S. and one German company specialized in agricultural products will present working papers on the symposium which will be dealing with the definition and importance of biotechnology and issued by international bodies in this regard, he clarified that since short period it has been formed a subcommittee of the Technical Committee for the Gulf Specifications of food and agricultural responsible for genetically modified food by the technical secretariat of the UAE and follow international developments relating to those products and the preparation of draft standards and Gulf technical regulations and other controls and procedures and the authority also adopt a number of international standards of the International Organization for Standardization and methods of detection of these products. |
