- Metrology: Science of Measurements.
- Measurement: Set of operations having the object of determining value of quantity.
- Measurement Standards: Material measure, measuring instrument, reference material or measuring system intended to define, realize, conserve or reproduce a unit or one or more values of quantity to serve as a reference.
- National Measurement Standard: Standard recognized by official decision to serve in the state as the basis for assigning values to other standards of the same quantity.
- Reference Standard: Standard, generally having the highest metrological quality available at a given location or in a given organization, from which measurement made there are derived.
- Working Standard: Standard that is used routinely to calibrate or check material measures, instruments or reference materials.
- Traceability: Property of the result of measurement or the value of Standard where by it can be related to stated references, usually national or international Standards through as unbroken chain of comparisons all having stated uncertainties.
- Legal Measuring Instrument: The measuring instrument used directly in commercial transaction or instruments that adversely affect the health and safety of citizens when producing inaccurate results.
- Pattern Approval: Decision of legal relevance, based on the evaluation report, that the type of a measuring instrument complies with the relevant statutory requirements and is suitable for use in the regulated area in such a way that it is expected to provide reliable measurement results over a defined period of time.
- Legal control of measuring instruments: Generic term used to globally designate legal operations to which measuring instruments may be subjected, e.g. type approval, verification, etc
- Verification mark: Mark applied to a measuring instrument certifying that the verification of the measuring instrument was carried out with satisfactory results
- Verification of a measuring instrument: Procedure (other than type approval)which includes the examination and marking and/or issuing of a verification certificate, that ascertains and confirms that the measuring instrument complies with the statutory requirements.
- International system of units (SI): Coherent system of units based on the International System of Quantities, their names and symbols, and a series of prefixes and their names and symbols, together with rules for their use, adopted by the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM).
- Control of measuring means: A control applied by the authority related to the used measurement means and to the conditions required in order to have measurement results and to express them and use them.
- Calibration: Operation establishing the relation between quantity values provided by measurement standards and the corresponding indications of a measuring system, carried out under specified conditions and including evaluation of measurement uncertainty.
- Legal Metrology: part of metrology relating to activities which result from
- statutory requirements and concern measurement, units of
- measurement, measuring instruments and methods of
- measurement and which are performed by competent bodies.
